Railrider’s Game to benefit the Century Club’s Nurses Scholarship Fund

Join us on the Fourth of July at 7:05 pm at PNC Field when The Century Club of Scranton will be featured as the Community Organization of the Game and to see our very own RailRiders (Yankees) vs the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies). Come early and tailgate before the game. First 25,000 fans will receive a Foam Light Up Stick. And stay and watch the post-game fireworks. Call us for tickets now, 570-342-0204. Speaker: John Knowles of Clearbrook Treatment Centers on “The Opioid Epidemic – 2016”

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 47,055 lethal drug overdoses in 2014. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic, with 18,893 overdose deaths related to prescription pain relievers, and 10,574 overdose deaths related to heroin in 2014. This talk will focus on the factors leading to the onset of the most deadly man made epidemic in medical history and what is being done to address it.

John Knowles, is currently the Senior Marketing Representative for Clearbrook Treatment Centers. A seasoned clinician and administrator in the addiction and mental health field for over 30 years, John has been involved in leading start up and management of three highly successful inpatient treatment programs in Pennsylvania, New York and New Hampshire. John is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) in Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. in Business, Marketing and Economics with a specialization in Addiction Treatment Administration and an MA in Social Policy from SUNY Empire State College, Saratoga, New York. John has completed both the Rutgers University School of Addiction Studies and also the Rutgers University Advanced School of Addiction Studies. He has had additional education and training in organizational management and leadership through the Levinson Institute at Harvard University.

Potluck Picnic

A Pot Luck Picnic will be held at noon on July 18th. We’ll eat inside as usual but think of your favorite summertime dish to bring to our “Summer Smorgasbord”. If you cannot cook that day, you may pay $15 for the luncheon, but you must let us know by July 11th. RESERVATIONS required. Please let Eileen know what you will be bringing when you make your reservation. Cards and games will follow the luncheon or you are welcome to sit and chat.

Speaker: James Loven on Solar Energy

On Tuesday evening, July 19, at 7:00 p.m.at the Century Club, James Loven will discuss developing and inventing the Reflective Solar Tracker which produced more than twice the energy of conventional systems. James Loven has been named inventor or co-inventor in four U. S. Patents.  In 2013 he began a collaboration with his son, Robert, to develop Sustainable Energy Management Systems LLC, to offer economically priced solar energy to the consumer market.  Join us for an informative evening.  Refreshments will follow.

September Luncheon and Card Party to benefit the Century Club Maintenance Fund

On Monday, September 19th at noon a turkey dinner will be served. The donation is $30 to benefit the Maintenance Fund for the Century Club at the Scranton Area Foundation. SAF will add 20% of what we raise for this fund until the end of the year. If you can’t come, please make a donation. The program will start at 11:00 a.m. with a duplicate game. George Mansour will be the director. Lunch at noon. After lunch, play mahjong, bridge, pinochle or just socialize for the afternoon. Paid reservations for the party should be made by September 12 with Eileen in the office.

We need help with this party. We would appreciate gift baskets for the raffle. Please make desserts and we need help with the raffle the day of the party.
